MAIB report into loss of fishing vessel SARAH JAYNE and death of her skipper off Brixham September 2012

Fleet Letter – Watkins Superyachts Ltd

Please find attached link to MAIB report into the capsize and foundering of FV Sarah Jayne with the loss of one life 6nm east of Berry Head, Brixham on 11 September 2012.

SARAH JAYNE capsized because in her loaded state, she had an insufficient reserve of stability to withstand the sudden flooding and its associated free-surface effect. The flooding of the fish hold and water entrained on deck following the swamping is concluded to be the only likely cause of flooding that contributed to the vessel's loss.

There are few if any synergies with the stability and likelihood of catastrophic flooding between this type of craft and large yachts, however a general awareness is essential. Some salutary reminders are raised of the stowage, security and deployment of life-saving appliances and EPIRBs and, again, the wearing of lifejackets.
