Suspicious activity - Gulf of Oman - 0800Z 17 September 2013
The south west monsoon continues to abate in all sea areas, increasing the risk of pirate attack, and the NSC reported yesterday the following suspicious activity against an unidentified merchant vessel at 0800Z on 17 September 2013 84 nm south east of Bandar-E-Jask in the Gulf of Oman:
‘On 17/09/13 at 0800 UTC, a merchant vessel was approached by two groups of skiffs at 20 minutes interval in position 24 deg 34 min N - 058 deg 41 min E. Rifles were observed on board. After vessel flares and rifle demonstration (sic), skiffs fled away. VESSEL SAFE.
WHILE NAVIGATING IN THE REGION VESSELS ARE URGED TO OPERATE AT A HEIGHTENED STATE OF READINESS, IMPLEMENT SELF PROTECTION MEASURES IN ACCORDANCE WITH BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICE VERSION 4 (BMP4).'
