DORIAN bound for Barbados

Sunday 26th August 2019

Tropical Storm DORIAN is now centred around 190 miles east of Grenada moving west-nor'west at 12 knots. This is at peak hurricane severity index rating now of 3 out of 50 (1 for size and 2 for intensity) with a maximum wind speed of 60 knots and a wind field of just 30 miles. As storms go, this is quite puny but will still be an unwelcome visitor. Mid-level shear and a whiff of dry air will keep development in check and prevent further deepening before passing over or close to Barbados tonight. Thereafter, DORIAN is expected to diminish before reaching the Dominican Republic. One plausible observer has seen a possible alternative track and development window which could reach Florida. Once this passes land, we can have a better assessment.

Disturbance Thirty One is is located about 280 miles south-sou'east of Cape Hatteras moving north-east at 8 knots. This has a development window ahead and is expected to reach weak tropical storm strength tomorrow. This will have limited impact ashore along the eastern seaboard but may reach Atlantic Canada later in the week.

Stand by for tropical storm conditions in Barbados tonight.
